Time for a Kitchen Remodel? Here Are Five Plumbing Parts and Installations to Consider

General Article

Kitchen remodeling projects are often more complex than installing new cabinetry and flooring. Much of the work in a kitchen makeover requires the services of a professional plumber. Additionally, because building codes need to be followed, these experts can make sure all regulations are adhered to. Here are five services you might want performed by your contractor:

1. Removing and Replacing a Garbage Disposal

Inspecting the drain lines is a necessary part of this project. If there is an existing garbage disposal in place, the plumber may remove it. This will offer access for an inspection before installing a new unit. The power will need to be turned off at the breaker location, and draining lines may have to be removed in order to examine them for signs of deterioration. If the drain lines are punctured or corroded, a leak may occur. Damage to the drain lines also may prevent food and debris from flowing through the pipes.

2. Replacing the Kitchen Sink

Plumbing configurations may be required when installing a new sink. A contractor will have the necessary parts and fittings for this job or will order them upon request. New housing may be needed, as well as PVC pipes, the correct fitting washer, basket strainer, and gasket. In addition, a tailpiece and sink trap will be needed. For a double sink installation, the contractor will connect both vessels using a part known as a T connector, which is attached to the tailpiece underneath the sink.

3. Installing a New Dishwasher

In some cases, the installation of a new dishwasher may involve some modification of existing hardware or fixtures. For instance, any cabinets that cover the pipes will need to be removed. Plumbing lines may need to be re-routed. However, if a new sink is to be installed, complete this project before installing the dishwasher. If this is done, the existing sink pipes can share the same line as the new dishwasher.

4. Upgrading from an Electric Range to a Gas Stove

When converting from electric to gas stovetop ranges, some configuration may be necessary. A licensed plumber is often qualified to install kitchen gas lines, and this is a task best left to the experts. The contractor should not begin the gas line installation process before a thorough examination of the fittings and plumbing lines is performed. The pro will look for signs of corrosion or tears in the housing. The project of installing new gas lines can be quite involved and will leave no room for error. The plumber may also need to infiltrate walls by using an electric drill and installing a carbon steel cable in the line to prevent a potential gas leak.

5. Installing a New Refrigeration Unit

The addition of a new refrigerator may require the expertise of a plumbing contractor. Refrigeration water lines may be needed for newer models of refrigerators that have ice makers and water filtration systems. Although it is not an extensive project, a professional will get the job … Read More
